The question is a bit confusing but if you mean how does a director instruct an actor how he wants the written character to be played then...he simply paints him a picture with words so the actor's creative mind can begin to process his own interpretation with the directors interpretation and somehow they can bring the character to life and that is why movie making is a collaboration. Often a character on paper is never brought to life on screen and often they get close and often magic strikes and a character becomes unforgettable like Rocky Balboa or Forrest Gump. Usually when that happens...the actor connects with the character on such a deep level that he almost becomes that character. Director's and actor's often struggle with two views to accomplish the same goal and hopefully the director is smart enough and has no ego and will let the actor act and only suggest that the actor try different things to challenge him to bring out his best.
