Overlapping conditions is called comorbidity. Sometimes overlapping conditions are complications and sometimes they are not. For example, people with personality disorders often engage in other mental conditions at different times as they progress. Personality disorders are Axis II disorders and Axis II disorders are often not covered by insurance, but people with Axis II disorders often displat behaviors that could be Axis I disorders which will be covered by insurance companies, such as depression, bipolar disorder, and even schizophrenia. These aren't complications; they are part of the evolution of a deeper underlying disorder. Also, some people with depression have panic attacks. These are two separate disorders in DSM-IV. To be sure that a person's problem is well-defined, both disorders are listed. Some people also have a combination of physical illnesses and mental illnesses. Some people with seizures, for example, show problems with cognition, such as verbal comprehension.
